The 3-1-2 Meridian Exercise

The energy vessel network of the body - the meridian system - has a vital role in preserving health. "Qi and Blood circulates in them, they balance Yin and Yang, they decide on life and death, they can heal the Hundred Diseases". Following is a health preserving and healing method based on this meridian theory.
Prof. dr. Zhu Zong Xiang (Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Acupuncture Meridian Research Center) said, everyone can have a long and healthy life, and to achieve this we only have to practice a simple exercise developed by Prof. Zhu in the 70s.
This is the "3-1-2 meridian exercise", which is a very simple and safe exercise and takes about 10-15 minutes daily.

Short description

"3" means the massage of three acupoints that can be located easily.

These acupoints, suggested by Prof Zhu are *Hegu* (LI-4 on the Large Intestine meridian), *Neiguan* (PC-6 on the Pericardium meridian) and *Zusanli* (St-36 on the Stomach meridian); each point (in pairs, on both left and right side) should be massaged for at least one minute.
What makes these points special is the fact that through them we can effect/affect the whole body. Hegu works on the arm and the areas above the shoulder, Neiguan works on the areas between the neck and the umbilicus, while Zusanli works primarily on the areas below the umbilicus. Hegu is the most important point on the Large Intestine meridian.

The acupoint Hegu
It runs from the index finger to the head, so massaging Hegu such diseases of arm and head can be healed as problems of the joints, stiffness in the shoulder, sore throat, laryngitis, sore teeth, headache, eye-problems.

Hegu (LI-4)
To locate Hegu (LI-4, Meeting Valley): Open thumb and index-finger on one hand, and place the first knuckle of the other thumb on the skin between the open thumb and finger. When bending the placed thumb, its end points to Hegu. When pressing on the point, it causes an "unpleasantly pleasant" sensation which usually runs along the arm where the meridian runs. Hegu is also referred to as "Aspirin-point" as massaging it has a strong pain-alleviating effect.
Neiguan is a point on the Pericardium meridian.

The acupoint Neiguan
The meridian is directly connected with the heart and goes through the lung, so the massage of this point helps in curing such diseases of the lung and heart as coronary heart diseases or asthma. Neiguan is also relaxes smooth muscles.

Neiguan (PC-6)
To locate Neiguan (PC-6, Inner Gate): bend your wrist slightly towards yourself, and put the three middle fingers of your other hand (i.e. index, middle and ring fingers) onto the crease and use the thumb to mark the middle of the arm next to the three fingers. The three middle fingers are for measuring only so you can move them away so that only the thumb stays there. The Neiguan point is between the two tendons you can easily feel with the thumb when the wrist is bent.

The acupoint Zusanli

Zusanli (St-36)
This meridian starts on the head and runs down through the thigh and leg all the way to the foot. Therefore not only diseases of the digestive system can be cured massaging Zusanli but other illnesses related to the pathway of the meridian, too, such as fever, head ache, tooth ache, mental disorders, asthma, high blood pressure, blood circulation problems, illness of the joints, vertigo, palpitation, diseases of the urogenital system. Massaging of the point can regulate appetite, too: strong massage of the point upwards - i.e. in the reverse direction of the Qi flow - decreases appetite, while massaging it downwards - i.e. in the same direction the Qi flows in the meridian - it increases appetite. Zusanli is also considered the point of longevity in China, this is the point responsible for the long life brought to you by 3-1-2.
To locate Zusanli (ST-36, Three Li on the Leg): put your four fingers to the outer lower corner of the patella. The point is at the border of the little finger 1 cun (Chinese inch, about 1.5 finger-width) outside of the edge of the tibia. OR grab your right patella with your thumb and index fingers of your right hand, and stretch your middle finger downwards parallel with the tibia. Zusanli is at the tip of the middle finger.

"1" means abdominal respiration for 4-5 minutes.

It is important that the chest should stay still during this, you should concentrate on the area below the umbilicus. you should make 5-4 inhalations/exhalations a minute. The more the abdominal muscles tighten, the more effective the exercise is. There are 9 meridians crossing the abdominal area (kidney, stomach, Spleen and Liver meridians) that are activated by abdominal respiration. Kidneys store prenatal Qi while Spleen and Stomach stores postnatal Qi derived from nutrients and air.
Abdominal respiration activates the liver, heals insomnia, high blood pressure, diseases of the liver and gallbladder, gastric ulcer, calms the spirit, heals diabetes and other gastric diseases.
Abdominal respiration requires a different technique from normal, everyday breathing.
When breathing normally fresh air usually fills the top part of the lungs, it is only there where air-exchange works. When doing abdominal respiration we force the lung to use the most of its capacity so that the biggest part is filled with fresh air.
Its technique is easy to learn.
Lie comfortably on your back, with knees bent a little and the abdomen should be loose. Place one hand right below the umbilicus while the other hand is on the chest. When breathing normally, the hand on the chest will be moving up and down. While doing abdominal respiration your hand on the chest should not move - meaning the chest is not moving -, only the hand at the umbilicus can move. After a few tries you will be able to do this.

"2" is simple crouching and standing up.

It is important to keep the whole sole on the on the ground. With hands stretched out in front of the body make at least 30 crouching. When moving down palms face the ground, when moving up, palms should also face upwards.
When practicing the physical exercises, the flow of Qi and Blood harmonizes thus washes Evil Qi like Cold or other pathogenic factors out of the body.
With this physical exercise such diseases as high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, diabetes, asthma, stroke and its complications, insomnia, joint inflammation, cold, constipation, diseases of digestive and hormone system can be healed. Crouching proved to be the best kind of physical exercise, however, other kind of moving can also be applied.
It is important that the pulse rate should not go above 120, you should not pant at the end and also, you should not be sweating.
What should those people do who, for any reason, are currently unable to do crouching or it is rather difficult for them to do this?
Well there are several ways to overcome this obstacle. The most important is to find a type of movement that requires both legs. It can be simple walking - at a bit higher than average pace might be more useful - or biking. When they decide to do crouching all the same, at the beginning then number of crouches can be lower, or, they can use some aid - like a chair - to do the exercise. The more they practice the easier the crouching will be and they will be able  to make more and more crouches. The exercise should be done day by day, this is true. But your health is worth the effort, isn't it?

Having read the above the following film will be easy to understand. Prof. Zhu explains the meridian exercise in this clip - in Chinese,  but you already know what he talks about. My personal advice is that you press the acupoints in every second, that is 60 times a minute, and each point should be massaged a minute long.

The meridian exercise is an active healing method.

What it means is that, unlike in western medicine, every one of us does something actively to promote our health. Everyone does the exercise by him/herself, everyone works for his/her healing/getting better, no matter if you call it self-healing, health promotion or prevention. The exercise should be done day by day, this is true. But your health and longevity is worth the effort, isn't it? Even, after a week of exercise you will miss it, should you skip one day's practice. The method is completely free, which is also a major feature, and it gives you a radical and complete healing, is free of any consulting or box-fees, has no side effects - and so on, and so on...

In western medicine the patient accepts the methods passively - healing will be done by the doctor or by the medicine -, healing is usually only temporal, we should take medicines - with different kinds of side effects - usually all life long , is rather expensive - and so on, and so on...

The below chart is based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine and the experiences of Prof. Zhu.

Hypertension (high blood pressure)

Western Medicine
Pathology: arteriolar spasm (vascular disease)
Treatment: Vascular dilation medicine, blood pressure temporarily reduced
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Pathology: The loss of control of Meridian, exuberance of Liver Yang
Treatment: With the massage of the three acupoints, you regulate the symptoms, reduce blood pressure. The abdominal respiration, to lowerLiver Yang, and to build up the Kidney Yin. Physical exercise, to activate the meridian "Qi and blood" of the whole body, thus blood pressure is reduced automatically.

Coronary heart disease

Western Medicine
Pathology: Coronary artery stenosis
Treatment: Medicines to dilate the coronary arteriole, operation.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Pathology: The loss of control of Meridian. Blood stasis due to stagnation of Qi of the heart.
Treatment: Massage of Neiguan to activate the Pericardium meridian, to increase the Blood and Qi. Physical exercise, to recover of cardiac functions.

Asthma

Western Medicine
Pathology: Bronchospasm

Diabetes

Western Medicine
Pathology: Functional disorder of insulin
Treatment: Diet control, medicine to lower blood sugar, insulin
Traditional Chinese Medicine
Pathology: Loss of control of meridians, the circulatory function of Spleen Qi disturbed
Treatment: Abdominal respiration to promote the recovery of the function of Spleen and Stomach meridians and to enhance the physical exercise and massage of the 3 acupoints, ensure the overall regulation of Blood and Qi to balance Yin and Yang.

Bone and joint diseases

Western Medicine
Pathology: Articular injury, hyperplastic osteo-arthritis
Treatment: Analgesic to diminish inflammation, hormone
Traditional Chinese Medicine
